Monday Miscellany for August 30, 2010

Hello:

You know, it’s not easy being a writer for writers.  We writers can make very demanding readers.

I’m as guilty of that as any writer.  I tend to read critically, am quick to spot typos, wince over grammar gaffes (at least the ones involving grammar rules I’m actually both familiar with and in total support of),  bemoan one-dimensional characters or predictable plots in fiction, and flinch at the use of cliches and passive writing in both fiction and nonfiction.

So why, when I received criticism about a grammatical no-no in my own writing (see last week’s Monday Miscellaneous), did I immediately feel petulant and defensive?  It’s OK for me to point out a written boo boo in Writer’s Digest magazine last month, but not OK for a reader to point out mine to me?

I consider myself to be relatively thick-skinned when it comes to feedback on my writing,  especially due to the fact that I do so much of it on behalf of clients.  Moreover, I try to take these public written blunders to heart and remember them forever–like the time I published an article by another writer without catching and editing her use of “revert back.”   Believe me, that will never happen again!

So I admit, I do grapple with when to use lay versus lie versus lies versus laid; it’s simply one of those grammar rules (or does it involve two?) I constantly trip up on.  But the fact is, I have long been aware of this flaw in my writing self.  I should never have let last week’s error get by me.

Ah well, I did, and I got exposed, and my initial reaction to the feedback was, “Well, hell, who’s perfect at this grammar thing anyway?!” Not Writer’s Digest or me, that’s for sure.  But that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t graciously accept the feedback and move on.  Until I make the next typo/grammar blooper, that is.

OK, here comes this week’s list of writing contests.  And here’s to your writing success.

Monday Miscellany for August 23, 2010

August 23, 2010 by

Hello and happy Monday:

I’ve become fascinated by the many potential ways to harness the power of social media.  While my own experience is mainly limited to blogging and Twitter, I am also familiar with Facebook, LinkedIn, Plaxo, Ning and eCademy, and would like to learn more about tapping into a couple of them for marketing purposes.

Why?  Because I believe with all my heart that these sites offer tremendous opportunities for writers–writing jobs that didn’t even exist a year or two ago.

The path I plan to pursue is offering social media support to small and mid-sized businesses.  Just as many writers have seized the opportunity to offer email and article marketing services to businesses for the past decade, today’s enterprising writers can provide blog, Twitter, fan page and forum management services for businesses that want and need to maintain a steady Web presence via these vehicles.

I am currently taking a course on how to launch my own social media management business, and hope to do so by this fall or by January first at the very latest.  If you think this is something you would like to hear more about, check out the video for this course at my affiliate link,  http://budurl.com/lgsocial .  I will also keep you posted now and then on my own progress.

OK, here are this week’s writing contests and here’s to your writing success.

Hello, hello!

Have you ever taken on a writing project, then wish you hadn’t?  Not me.  But what I have done, even recently, is set too low of a rate for some ghostwriting I’ve been doing. It’s a fun and steady gig, but one I wanted too much, and I feared missing out on the opportunity by setting my rate too high.  Big mistake.

With so many avenues for making money as a writer these days,  my writing time would be better spent developing infoproducts, ebooks and services for writers, while taking on only those freelance projects that pay the hourly wage I seek.  Same goes for you.  When you set your rate too low, you eventually don’t feel motivated to do it.  I’m kind of at that point now with this gig.

I may raise the rate and see what happens.  If the client doesn’t bite, well,  I really think that would be okay with me.  I have both enjoyed and learned from the experience.  Perhaps it’s time to move on.

I’ll let you know what happens.  In the meantime, here are some writing contest links for you to check out, and here’s to your writing success.
