Monday Miscellany for July 12, 2010

Hello!

I recently read a back issue of Writer’s Digest magazine in which the editor-in-chief wrote that there was “much adieu” about something or other, with no sign that she was being tongue-in-cheek (or should I say “chic”?).  Taken aback, I hopped right onto the internet to see if I’d had it wrong for all these years.  Once I’d verified that my version was indeed correct and that I’d made much ado about nothing, I marveled at how the editors and proofreaders at the publication I’ve idolized since I was seventeen years old could let such a gaffe slip by them.

Not that I should talk.  In my enthusiasm and impatience, I’ve let many a typo or partially edited phrase fly over the years, to my never-ending chagrin.  Hitting the “Send, “Publish,” “Tweet,” “Share” or “Add Comment” button with a flourish, I broadcast my poor typing skills or inability to catch my own editing errors across the World Wide Web, blogosphere or Twitterverse, depending on which dimension I’m in at the time.  While I hope not, there’s most likely a Hahn-o-blooper hiding out in this very post, just waiting to be unveiled to everyone who wanders this way.

So I quickly forgave the editors and proofreaders at WD, and hope none of them suffered career setbacks (i.e., were told adieu or even adios) over the error.  And I’ve resolved once again to slow down, smell the roses and for God’s sake, Mary Anne, take some time to look over your own work before sending it out, alone and defenseless, into the world of potential critics, er, readers.

On to this week’s list of writing contests.  Here’s to your writing success.
