What Does “WriteSuccess” Mean to You?
October 16, 2009 by Mary Anne
Filed under From My Desk To Yours
Back in 2000, when I was searching for a name for my online newsletter for writers, I simply sought names that weren’t already being used by other writing Web sites and e-zines. At the time, that meant I couldn’t go with WriteAdvice, WriteWay, WriteHanded or a host of other cutesy titles containing the word “write,” as they were already all in use.
Then I thought of “WriteSuccess.” While not as cutesy, the name struck a chord with me—it captured what I wanted to encourage writers to strive for, and helped me determine the kinds of content and resources I wanted to deliver. It was unique, and most importantly, no one else had already claimed it. So I did.
Nearly a decade later, WriteSuccess still remains pretty much mine-all-mine, although to make sure of that, I’ve applied for the trademark. And my goal for this newest incarnation of the site remains the same—to encourage writers to strive for their own success, however they define the term.
Which leads me to wonder—what does “WriteSuccess” mean to you? How do you define your success as a write? For me, it changed over the years…at first it was getting my first article sale, then seeing my byline on a fairly regular basis, then receiving feedback from readers, or seeing my articles picked up by other writing Web sites…does this mean that we never truly achieve “success” as writers? That we are forever striving for the next goal or accomplishment?
I would be interested in your thoughts on this. Is “WriteSuccess” a constantly moving target? What do I mean when I sign off each article post with…
Here’s to your writing success,
Mary Anne
